- While Road to Avonlea is based on L.M. Montgomery novels, including Anne of Green Gables, The Story Girl, The Golden Road, and Chronicles of Avonlea, Sullivan diverged from the books to bring the characters into the 20th century. Sullivan found that it would be far easier to create his own interpretation by having the stories take place in the Edwardian period, rather than the Victorian era.

- Zachary Bennett, who plays Felix King, appeared in several Sullivan films, including Lantern Hill, By Way of the Stars, and his breakout role in Looking for Miracles.

- When searching for locations to film Avonlea, Kevin Sullivan searched high and low, and considered every possible option. He eventually settled on an area just north of Toronto, Ontario. Only later did he realize that the location was a mere 15 minutes from where Leaksdale, Ontario, where L.M. Montgomery and her family lived for years after moving away from P.E.I. Many scenes, including exterior shots, were still filmed on location in P.E.I.

- Seven seasons, 7000 shoes—Avonlea’s costume department had to clothe dozens, sometimes hundreds of actors for each episode. Each character’s outfit had to be carefully conceived to match the time period and context. The result of all this hard work, after 91 episodes, was over 10,000 costumes!
